Also called 5 spices, it is a fine powdered spice blend of Asian origin. Its flavor is mild, fresh, with no heat, and it is often paired with soy sauce in dishes.

It gives its characteristic flavor to Cantonese rice, and pairs wonderfully with duck, pork (whether in chops or stir-fried), and vegetable, shrimp, or mussel soups.

Add it to a simple tomato soup, for example, with a squeeze of lemon, and the illusion will be perfect: it will taste like an Asian-style soup!
